Healed Through Journal Writing

Healed Through Journal WritingIs there a connection between psychological events and recurring health problems? Can you be healed through journal writing?

The answer to both questions is yes.

Jenny Patton suffered from Crohn’s Disease.  Her weight dropped to 90 pounds because she was unable to digest food normally. She found little satisfaction in her job and snapped at her friends. Mourning her mother’s death, she began writing journal entries as a way to connect with her.

She did not know then that writing about stressful events helps us to come to terms with them by lessening the impact they have on our physical and emotional health. She did not know that studies had proved that people who wrote about past traumas strengthened their immune cells and had fewer doctor visits for six months after writing.

She just knew that she felt better emotionally after writing in her journal. She would begin an entry feeling empty or angry. Ten minutes later, she would close the book, feeling less despair and even grateful.

After writing journal entries for some time, Ms. Patton believed that she was healed through journal writing, which is also called scriptotherapy. Her Crohn’s Disease had gone into remission.

According to  Dr. Sheppard Kominars, author of “Write for Life: Healing Body, Mind & Spirit Through Journal Writing,” writing can help cure emotional and physical wounds. He believes It can reduce the physical symptoms of hypertension, chronic pain, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer. For people who have suffered psychological trauma, Kominars says writing can improve their overall well being, lower their blood pressure and improve their immune function.
